My photo of a great horned owl parent comforting its young won an "Award of Excellence" from the NJ Art Association in the current conservation-themed exhibit at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, NJ. This is the highest level award after Best in Show. I made the photograph in the woods by my home.  The evening before, I had discovered two owlets "branching" out from the home nest, not quite able to fly. I went back the next morning, with a river between us so as not to disturb them, and watched for  quite a while.  At one point, a great blue heron flew along the stream, minding its own business, and out of nowhere, the parent owl swooped in to make sure it stayed away from its babies.  One of the owlets scooted over to the parent for comfort, as shown here.  Shortly after, the other came by for some snuggling, too.  It was such a treat to witness these beautiful beings!
